As a Cruise specialist for Ideal cruising I was given the opportunity to visit the Ocean Village 2 for an overnight visit on the 21st April 2007. I say I visited the Ocean Village 2, however officially she had no name at that time as the ship was not due to be named until the 24th April.
Having not visited the original Ocean Village at this time I really have no comparison to make with that ship, however I have been on a few other ships, and can confirm that the Ocean Village 2 is one of the best ships I have been on. Firstly I would like to mention the Freedom factor, Originally I thought the Ocean Village line were all about being relaxed, freedom to eat what you like, when you like, and do pretty much what you want, when you want, however it is this and a whole lot more. You have Freedom in your cabin to move around as the cabins are very spacious (188 sq ft) in comparison with the other cruise ships that I have visited, and the layout of the cabin was fantastic, and contained everything that you should need for the time you spend in your cabin. Staying on the subject of Freedom, I really could not believe how much public space there was, the shops on board were all of reasonable size (and not the pokey little shops found on some cruise lines), the Bars were very spacious and left no reason for people to be all squished up together (unless you really want too), the restaurants were huge, and once again nicely laid out (so people are not pulling their chair into the back of yours), and then there was the Karma Spa, Gym, Sauna, Steam room, and Fitness centres... I can not think of any other ship that has so much space for these sort of areas.
The prices for drinks in the bars were very reasonable (although I did have to look, as ours were free all night, Hoorah!), the pools were of a reasonable size, and the upper decks had plenty of sun bathing room. The Childrens clubs were nicely thought about, from the Bean bags and little cars for the youngsters in Base Camp, through to the Sony Playstations, Arcade machines, Disco Area and Soft Drinks bar in the teenage area The Attic. The Marquee, which is the onboard theatre is unique in that it is the only cruise ship to offer a bar in the theatre itself, and is of a good size, being not too big, but big enough to accomodate, The show we saw was brilliant (bear in mind that this was their first official performance on board), and The Marquee also doubles up as a Show area and Nightclub for late evening entertainment. On the Deck 12, in between the pools is a large round framework which is used for laser shows at night, and also by circus performers to show off their talents (A lot of talent). The Connexions Bar is basically a comedy club in the evening, and I have to say the performers (although no one I've heard of) were extremely good, and had my colleagues and myself in stitches. I have to admit I was a little worried about the Buffet Dining (as normally cold by the time I get there), however I was pleasently surprised that the food was nice and hot, constantly refreshed by the superb chefs, and the food was delicious, so no complaints from me about Buffets again!
Overall, Ocean Village two represents excellent value for money, with the excellent entertainment, lovely food, and Extremely Spacious Surrounding, Along with other on board activities. Will I be booking it for myself...... Probably, in the not too distant future.
