My wife and I have recently spent a couple of weeks on Fred Olsen's Black Prince. Whilst admitting that this is now the oldest of his ships, this only adds to the charm. It is like going back to the good old days when people were polite and courteous. The ship sailed from Liverpool via Lisbon to the Canary Islands, Madeira and Oporto before returning to Liverpool.
The trips on shore were great, well organised and good value for money. Advice, if you only visit the Capital of the country you will see a poor copy of London, Paris or Rome, if you get out and about you see the real world. Spend a little see a lot!
The staff on board were nothing short of excellent!!! From the Captain to the Room Attendant, cheerful and efficient and friendly. The Bar Staff when they were not serving drinks would be seen cleaning with great pride and determination. The price of the drinks were about the same as my Local Pub, I am surprised to say.
The food was out of this world, we never had the same menu twice. A lot of dishes on the menu were the names you see in a 'posh' restaurant, but are usually too frightened to order. On this Cruise I was able to be daring, knowing that if I didn't like it, the next meal was only a few hours away. By the way, I found, there was nothing on the menu I didn't like. The waiters up to the Maitre 'D could not do enough for you, the atmosphere was relaxed and pleasant, there was a smooth calm even in a gale force 11. The 'Dunkirk' spirit was alive and well.
The cabins were as expected, not over large but more than adequate. The beds were comfortable and like magic were always made up on return to our cabin, again the service was amazing.
The evening entertainment was a little old fashioned for my liking, it could do with coming up to date. I am 52 years old and most probably one of the 'new kids on the block' and although I did not expect to hear todays music, I think it would have been nice to hear The Beatles or newer, it seemed to stop as soon as Elvis hit the Charts. Can anyone tell me who Tony Bennett is?
However this aside, if you want a really relaxing holiday full of social graces, this comes highly recommended and I am saving up for my next Cruise
