We booked this Celebrity cruise with very high expectations. We have cruised many times before with P&O. Both my partner and I agree we wouldn’t rush to book another Celebrity, unlike we tend to do when returning from a P&O! The ship is ten years old, and it shows. We found in certain areas outside of the ship it was obvious this ship had been in service for ten years. We previously cruised on P&O Oriana which is also ten years old but you would never have known. We had booked an ‘Ocean View’ cabin (which we normally book so know what to expect) and on arrival we found we had a tiny porthole. This was very disappointing, we complained but to no avail, I don’t think they should be selling portholes as an outside cabin; it should be sold as a restricted view. The food was fantastic. All of the food was of a very very high quality and in my opion better than P&O (hard to believe I know)! The showers around the pool didn’t work so on sea days this made swimming in the salt water pools quite uninviting. Also being an American cruise line you are surrounded by Americans I think we met two other English couples! The evening entertainment was ok if you liked shows, my partner and I aren’t that fussed. That left us with one band that sung every song in Spanish (I think) and a duo which were quite boring and repetitive. There is nothing happening after late sitting dinner other than the ‘night club’ which after 11 nights became boring! The tipping is really really pushed upon you, with the Cruise director informing us he doesn’t want it to be a ‘financial struggle’! They deducted about $250 from your onboard account unless you opted out, which we did. We do tip but normally but we decide what we give whom. We paid £2500 for this cruise and felt that was enough money and any extra we wanted to give we would without being informed that’s what is expected of us. They also put 15% gratuity on top of every drink you buy. This is fine but a number of times I went to the bar to get my drink as it was quicker and I was still being charged 15%!! The cabin was clean and of a reasonable size, I must say I hate blankets and sheets but we were not eligible for a duvet as we were not conserge class! The excursions were very expensive, we didn’t do any. We went on a 11 night cruise and on the 7th day the cruise director started going on about getting off! We still had another 4 days to go! All in all it was ok, some nice touches, Champaign on arrival and sorbet served to you around the pool, but not enough to sway us from P&O, and I honestly thought I would be swayed! We had great food great weather but I wouldn’t do another Celebrity cruise unless it was a newer ship, it was a bargain or it was going to destinations we couldn’t go on another cruise line.
