In Northern Ireland, Bank of England notes are used but Northern Irish banks print their own versions, which are more commonly used. Northern Irish notes, while acceptable, are often refused in the rest of the UK due to lack of familiarity.
Several Scottish banks also issue their own bank¬notes. All UK banks will accept them, but foreign banks will not.
Visa, MasterCard and usually AmEx credit and debit cards are widely accepted and ATMs are widely available. Cash withdrawals from some ATMs may be subject to a small charge, but most are free.
Travellers cheques issued by Amex, Thomas Cook and Visa are widely recognised. Eurocheques can also be cashed in Ireland.
Tipping
In general, you should leave a tip of at least 10% in restaurants unless the service was unsatisfactory. You don’t need to leave a tip f the bill already includes a service charge. Tipping in bars is not customary.
Taxi drivers also expect tips (about 10%, or rounded up to the nearest pound). Taxis in Wales are expensive, and drivers rarely expect a tip unless they have gone out of their way to help you.

England
The climate is temperate with warm wet summers and cool wet winters. Weather varies from day to day and throughout the country as a whole.
The west coast and mountainous areas receive the most rain; the east coast, particularly in the north, is colder and windier. The southeast is sunnier than the north with less rain and a climate approaching the continental. The southwest has the mildest climate overall.
Ireland
Summers are warm, while temperatures during winter are much cooler. Spring and autumn are very mild, and rain falls all year.
The coldest months are January and February, when daily temperatures range from 4–8°C (39–46°F). During the warmest months, July and August, the average is 16°C (61°F). A hot summer’s day in Ireland is 22–24°C (72–75°F), although it can sometimes reach 30°C (86°F).
Ireland receives a lot of rain, with certain areas getting a soaking as many as 270 days of the year. The southeast is the driest, enjoying a more continental climate.
Scotland
Scotland is generally colder than the rest of the UK, especially in the more northerly regions. In upland areas, snow is common in winter, and fog and mist can occur at any time of year.
The east coast tends to be drier than the west – rainfall averages around 650mm – and it is often warmer in summer and colder in winter. Temperatures rarely drop below 0°C (32°F) on the coast. The west coast is milder and wetter, with more than 1500mm of rain and average summer highs of 19°C (66°F).
May, June and September usually have the best weather; July and August are usually warm, but may be wet too.
Wales
Wales tends to be wetter than England with slightly less sunshine, although the coastal areas can be very warm in summer.
June to August are the hottest months, though the busiest for tourism. May and September offer warm days without the crowds.
October to January are the wettest months, and although it can rain at any time of year, summers are generally mild and fresh with average temperatures just below 20°C (68°F). In general, the coast is the driest part of the country and the mountains the wettest.
